At PhysioFit, Pilates is a central focus in how we deliver effective care and achieve positive results. We incorporate Pilates-based exercises into our physical therapy sessions as well as offer a variety of ongoing fitness options to help you reach your long-term goals. Pilates techniques affect the entire body. Instead of isolating muscle groups, the entire body is involved, integrating the upper and lower extremities with the core musculature. Mental imaging, focus and breathing patterns are used to reduce stress and unnecessary movement while emphasizing static or dynamic core stabilization. This includes an emphasis on coordinating abdominals, pelvic girdle and shoulder strength.  The principle of strengthening while lengthening muscles is critical in providing long term benefit that carry over into improving your daily life.

How can Pilates help during the pregnancy & postpartum period?

Pregnancy creates many changes in a woman’s body – a changing center of gravity, release in relaxin hormone causing laxity in ligaments and stretching of your abdominals and pelvic floor muscles. This reduces the stability in your low back and pelvis. This excessive movement can lead to pain and inflammation. Excessive body fluid retention can cause carpal tunnel syndrome in the wrists. The additional weight gain can also increase your chance of injury. Pilates exercise can help strengthen your core muscles surrounding the spine and thereby restore the stability lost while you are pregnant. A Pilates exercise routine, guided by a knowledgeable instructor can help you:

  • Be more comfortable during the pregnancy
  • Reduce stress and swelling through exercise
  • Decrease the chances of injury before, during and after delivery
  • Heighten balance awareness as the body changes
  • Increase flexibility, which will be very beneficial during delivery
  • Improve circulation to the abdomen and increase muscle tone
  • Improve posture, thereby giving the fetus more room to develop and reducing neck and back pain
  • Hasten recovery after delivery
  • Prevent or reduce back pain
  • Improve breathing and lung capacity
  • Improve coordination
  • Improve the ability to relax
  • Prevent separation of rectus abdominis muscles in third trimester

The postpartum period is a time when you are also vulnerable to back and pelvic injuries due to the inefficiency of the abdominal musculature after being stretched during your pregnancy. When guided by an experienced instructor, Pilates is a safe and effective way to regain your shape without the risk of separating your abdominals during this period.
